O’ahu is one giant backdrop, which is exactly why choosing where to shoot can feel overwhelming. Turquoise bays, dramatic green cliffs, golden beaches, and quiet local corners are all within a short drive of one another.
As a veteran-owned photography team based on the windward side, we’ve scouted the whole island. Here are the spots we return to again and again for couples, families, and milestone sessions — plus a few tips on matching the right location to your vision.
Lanikai & Kailua Beach (windward side)
Lanikai is famous for a reason: powdery sand, calm turquoise water, and the Mokulua islands sitting just offshore. Paired with neighboring Kailua Beach, this stretch delivers soft morning light that’s perfect for sunrise couples and family sessions. Arrive early and you’ll often have whole sections of beach to yourselves.
Waikiki & Diamond Head
If you want that instantly recognizable O’ahu look, Waikiki gives you palm trees, gentle surf, and the iconic Diamond Head crater in the background. It’s lively and convenient — ideal for visitors staying nearby who want classic Hawaii portraits without a long drive.
Kualoa & the windward cliffs
For something bold and cinematic, the towering green ridges near Kualoa are hard to beat. The dramatic mountains and open pastureland create depth and scale that make couples and families look like they’re starring in their own island film.
The North Shore
Big-wave energy, rustic charm, and wide sandy beaches define the North Shore. In winter the surf is dramatic; in summer the water calms for relaxed family play. Sunset Beach and the surrounding coast offer a laid-back, golden-hour feel.
Ko Olina (west side)
The west side’s calm lagoons and reliable sunsets make Ko Olina a favorite for families with young kids and for couples chasing that warm evening glow. Sheltered water means less wind and easier sessions with little ones.
Quiet local gems near Hau’ula
Close to our home base on the east side, the beaches around Hau’ula stay peaceful and uncrowded. These hidden spots are perfect for relaxed maternity and family shoots when you’d rather skip the tourist crowds entirely.
How to choose the right spot
Think about three things: the light you want (soft pastels at sunrise, warm gold at sunset), how far you’re willing to travel, and the vibe — beachy and bright, or lush and dramatic. Tell us your priorities and we’ll recommend a location and time that fits your group, including backup spots in case of weather.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need a permit for photos on O’ahu beaches?
Most casual portrait sessions on public beaches don’t require a permit, but some state parks and special locations do. We’ll let you know if your chosen spot needs one and help you plan accordingly.
Which spot is best for families with small kids?
Ko Olina’s calm lagoons and the quiet east-side beaches are easiest for little ones — gentle water, fewer crowds, and room to roam.
When should we arrive?
For sunrise sessions, plan to arrive about 15 minutes before the scheduled start so we can settle in and catch the best early light.
